Jo Konta told what she must do to beat Garbine Muguruza at the Aussie Open. Annabel Croft has backed Jo Konta to complete a hat-trick of wins over Garbine Muguruza — if the British No.1 is less “frantic”.
The 2016 semi-finalist here at the Australian Open has beaten the double Grand Slam winner in their last two matches.
And before their latest meeting, coming up on Thursday morning UK time, Eurosport pundit Croft said: “Jo has talked very openly about the fact she wanted to be a little more relaxed and to be able to show the right kind of intensity.
“I am not sure that we have seen a calmer Jo here in Melbourne. There’s still that rather frantic feel about her, but I’m sure she’ll be very confident.
“When you’ve come through a match like she did in the first round, where she had to dig so deep, it gives you a lot of confidence.
“I think she does match up well against Muguruza. If Jo gets locked-in mentally, she can really push her opponent. She can really do a lot of damage.”
Katie Boulter, who shocked former semi-finalist Ekaterina Makarova in the first round, went down 6-3 6-4 to world No.11 Aryna Sabalenka despite vocal support.
“This week has been massive,” said the British No.3, who also played in the Hopman Cup. “The past couple of weeks as well. My whole trip to Australia has been a learning experience. It has been really great for me. It has been a great experience. I am really happy that everyone can get behind me. I am really fortunate they did. Hopefully everyone can follow me on this path and be with me.”
